Elden Ring Nightreign Ditching Popular FromSoftware Feature

Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Other Asynchronous Features Enhanced

FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not include the series' signature in-game messaging system. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is purely practical. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions around 40 minutes long, leaves insufficient time for players to read and write messages.

The asynchronous messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware titles, has fostered significant player engagement, contributing greatly to the Soulsborne experience. However, Ishizaki explained that this feature wouldn't fit Nightreign's more intense, streamlined gameplay.

While the messaging system is absent, other asynchronous elements are not only retained but improved. The bloodstain mechanic returns, enhanced to allow players to observe and even loot the ghosts of fallen comrades. This aligns with FromSoftware's goal of creating a "compressed RPG" experience with high intensity and minimal downtime, as evidenced by the game's three-day structure.

FromSoftware aims for a more consistently intense and multiplayer-centric experience in Nightreign compared to the original Elden Ring. This focus on a tighter, more action-packed experience is a key driver behind the omission of the messaging system.

The game, revealed at The Game Awards 2024, is targeting a 2025 release, though a specific date remains unannounced.
