In-Game Purchases Thrive: Freemium Games Dominate with 82% Purchases
A recent Comscore and Anzu report reveals compelling insights into US gamers' habits, preferences, and spending trends within the gaming industry.
The Rise of Freemium Gaming and In-App Purchases
Freemium's Explosive Popularity
Comscore's 2024 State of Gaming Report, a collaboration with in-game advertiser Anzu, paints a picture of the US gaming landscape. A striking finding: 82% of US gamers made in-game purchases in freemium titles last year. The freemium model, blending free access with optional premium features, has proven incredibly successful. Games like Genshin Impact and League of Legends exemplify this model's widespread appeal.
The freemium model's success is particularly evident in mobile gaming. Maplestory, released in North America in 2005, is considered a pioneer, introducing the concept of real-money purchases for virtual items. This model has since become a cornerstone of game development and online retail.
The continued popularity and growth of freemium games have significantly benefited developers and major online retailers like Google, Apple, and Microsoft. Research from Corvinus University attributes freemium's appeal to factors such as utility, self-indulgence, social interaction, and competitive gameplay. These elements incentivize players to make purchases to enhance their experience, access new content, or avoid ads.
Comscore's Chief Commercial Officer, Steve Bagdasarian, emphasized the report's significance, highlighting gaming's cultural impact and the importance of understanding gamer behavior for brands seeking to engage this audience.
The financial implications of in-game purchases were also discussed by Tekken's Katsuhiro Harada in February. He noted that, given the increasing costs of game development, revenue from in-game transactions in Tekken 8 directly contributes to the game's ongoing development.
