New Game Announced by BioShock, Borderlands Veterans
Summary
Stray Kite Studios, a team of industry veterans with credits on major titles like BioShock, Borderlands, and Age of Empires, announces Wartorn, their first original game. This real-time strategy roguelite boasts destructible environments, impactful moral choices, and a striking painterly art style. Early Access launches on Steam and the Epic Games Store are planned for Spring 2025.
Wartorn is the debut original title from Dallas-based Stray Kite Studios, established in 2018 and currently employing around 30 people. Their previous work includes the standalone Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure and numerous creative maps for Fortnite.
This new title casts players into a chaotic fantasy world, following two elven sisters on a perilous journey to reunite with their family. The narrative unfolds through challenging battles and morally complex decisions.
Wartorn Is Chaotic in More Than One Way
Wartorn's fantasy world is deeply fractured and chaotic, presenting constant challenges for the player. Adding to this unpredictable nature is the game's physics-driven environmental destruction system. Unscripted destruction ensures each encounter is unique, emphasizing the game's core theme: finding purpose amidst chaos. Co-founder and Creative Director Paul Hellquist states, "We’ve poured our hearts into creating a game that not only entertains but also makes players think deeply about sacrifice, survival, and the bonds that unite us."
Wartorn Will Require Players To Make Tough Decisions
Between battles, players face difficult choices, such as deciding who to save or feed, influencing the story and ensuring replayability. Combat offers similar freedom, featuring a dynamic magic system that lets players combine elemental forces (fire, water, lightning) in creative ways. Spells interact uniquely with each other and the environment (e.g., shocking enemies in water).
We’ve poured our hearts into creating a game that not only entertains but also makes players think deeply about sacrifice, survival, and the bonds that unite us.
The roguelite progression system allows upgrades to carry over between runs, making each attempt easier. The painterly art style enhances the dramatic setting, while accessible gameplay features include a slow-motion mode for precise command control during intense moments. Wartorn is set for an Early Access release on Steam and the Epic Games Store in Spring 2025.
