Palworld Won't Answer the Question 'What's Beyond AAA?'
Palworld's Unexpected Path: Beyond AAA, or Beyond Expectations?
Pocketpair, the creators of the wildly successful Palworld, could easily leverage their massive profits to create a game exceeding AAA standards. However, CEO Takuro Mizobe has a different vision. This article explores his reasoning and Pocketpair's unique approach to game development.
Pocketpair: Embracing the Indie Spirit
Palworld's phenomenal success has generated tens of billions of yen in revenue (tens of millions of USD). This windfall could fund a project dwarfing typical AAA titles. Yet, Mizobe has reiterated his disinterest in such a large-scale undertaking. He believes Pocketpair lacks the organizational structure to manage a project of that magnitude at this stage in their company's development.
Mizobe explained that Palworld's development was financed by profits from previous titles, Craftopia and Overdungeon. While the current financial success presents an unprecedented opportunity, he's chosen a different path.
"Scaling our next game with these profits would not only surpass AAA standards, but it would also exceed our organizational capacity," Mizobe stated in a recent GameSpark interview. He prefers to focus on projects that thrive within the indie game space, emphasizing the inherent appeal of smaller-scale development.
Mizobe highlights the challenges of AAA game development, particularly the difficulty of creating a hit with a large team, contrasting it with the flourishing indie scene. He attributes Pocketpair's success to the indie community and expresses a desire to give back.
Expanding the Palworld Universe
Mizobe previously stated that Pocketpair won't be expanding its team or upgrading offices. Instead, the focus is on expanding the Palworld IP through various mediums.
Palworld, currently in early access, has already garnered significant praise for its gameplay and consistent updates, including the recently added PvP arena and the Sakurajima island expansion. Furthermore, Pocketpair has established Palworld Entertainment in partnership with Sony to manage global licensing and merchandising.
In conclusion, Pocketpair's decision to prioritize indie game development and IP expansion demonstrates a unique and potentially impactful approach to success in the gaming industry.
