Dynasty Warriors: Origins Dev Team Was Instructed to “Go Kill The Player”
Dynasty Warriors: Origins ups the ante with significantly more challenging enemies. Producer Tomohiko Sho's directive to the development team? A simple, yet impactful, "Go and kill the player." This article delves into the design choices behind the game's increased difficulty.
A Deadlier Battlefield: "Go and Kill the Player"
The heightened challenge in Dynasty Warriors: Origins stems directly from producer Tomohiko Sho's instruction to enhance enemy aggression and strength. In an interview with PlayStation.Blog, Sho explained the reasoning: to inject a greater sense of realism into the combat. The goal wasn't just to make the player character struggle; enemy soldiers and generals needed to feel equally threatened and determined.
While increasing the difficulty, Sho ensured the game remained engaging, not frustrating. The challenge is designed to be rewarding, fostering a sense of accomplishment. He aimed to create a balance between the classic "musou" exhilaration of overwhelming hordes and the realistic brutality of a warzone. This blend, he admitted, presented a considerable development hurdle.
A Return to its Roots: "Origins"
A significant departure from previous entries is the absence of a sequential number in the title. Instead of "Dynasty Warriors 10," the game is titled "Dynasty Warriors: Origins," marking the first unnumbered title in the franchise's history.
This "Origins" designation highlights the game's focus: a concentrated narrative covering only the first half of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, unlike previous installments that adapted the entire story. In an interview at the 2024 Tokyo Game Show with TheGamer, Sho clarified that the game's story concludes with the Battle of Chibi (Battle of Red Cliffs). The decision was made to provide a more thorough and intense portrayal of this pivotal period in the novel.
Released on January 17th, Dynasty Warriors: Origins, the latest main installment after a seven-year gap, introduces an original protagonist, the Nameless Hero, navigating the power struggles of Han Dynasty China. The game is available on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
