Deadlock Player Count Plummets, Valve Adjusts Development Strategy

Deadlock, Valve's MOBA-shooter, has seen a significant drop in its player base, with peak online numbers now rarely exceeding 20,000. In response, Valve has announced a revised development approach.

The studio will move away from its previous bi-weekly update schedule. Future updates will be released on a flexible timeline, prioritizing quality over frequency. A developer stated that this change will allow for more substantial and polished updates. Regular hotfixes will, however, continue to address urgent issues.

This shift comes after a dramatic decline in player numbers. While Deadlock once boasted over 170,000 concurrent players, daily peaks now hover around 18,000-20,000.

Does this signal trouble for the game? Not necessarily. Deadlock remains in early access, with no release date announced. Given its developmental stage, and the potential prioritization of the rumored new Half-Life game, a release in the near future is unlikely.

Valve's adjusted strategy reflects a commitment to quality over speed. The company believes a superior product will naturally attract and retain players. This approach mirrors the evolution of Dota 2's development cycle, suggesting a long-term vision for Deadlock's success. Therefore, there's no immediate cause for alarm among fans.
