Monster Hunter Wilds: A Legacy Forged in Collaboration

Monster Hunter Wilds boasts numerous innovations, features, and quality-of-life enhancements. But its development was subtly shaped by earlier crossover events in Monster Hunter World, specifically collaborations with Final Fantasy XIV and The Witcher 3. These partnerships weren't just cosmetic; they directly influenced core gameplay mechanics in Wilds.

Naoki Yoshida, director of Final Fantasy XIV, provided key inspiration during the FFXIV crossover event. His suggestion to display attack names on-screen in real-time led to a significant HUD improvement in Wilds, a feature glimpsed in the World crossover's Behemoth fight. The positive player response to the Witcher 3 crossover, meanwhile, solidified the decision to incorporate more dialogue options and a voiced protagonist.

During the Monster Hunter: World and FFXIV crossover event, Yoshida proposed displaying attack names as they're performed. This feedback directly resulted in the enhanced HUD seen in Wilds (highlighted in the image above). The 2018 FFXIV crossover, featuring Cactuars, a crystal-enhanced Kulu-Ya-Ku, Drachen armor, and the challenging Behemoth fight, provided a testing ground for this concept. The Behemoth fight, in particular, showcased on-screen attack names, a mechanic previously unseen in Monster Hunter, except for a minor instance with the "Jump" emote after defeating Behemoth.

The Witcher 3's Influence on Dialogue and Character

The overwhelmingly positive reception to the Witcher 3 crossover in Monster Hunter: World heavily influenced Wilds' design. Director Yuya Tokuda cited the crossover as a successful experiment, demonstrating players' appetite for expanded dialogue and a more expressive protagonist.

The Witcher 3 crossover featured Geralt, a speaking character with dialogue choices, a stark contrast to previous Monster Hunter protagonists. This directly informed the decision to give Wilds' protagonist a voice and interactive conversations with NPCs.

Tokuda revealed that while Wilds wasn't in active development during the World collaborations, these experiences shaped his vision for the future of the series. The success of the Witcher 3 collaboration, spearheaded by Tokuda's direct engagement with CD Projekt Red, proved particularly influential.
