Call of Duty Studio Loses Multiplayer Development Director
Longtime Call of Duty Veteran Greg Reisdorf Departs Sledgehammer Games
After a remarkable 15-year tenure at Sledgehammer Games, Call of Duty multiplayer creative director Greg Reisdorf has announced his departure. His contributions spanned numerous Call of Duty titles, significantly shaping the multiplayer experience for millions of players.
Reisdorf's journey began with the development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011), the very first Call of Duty title released by Sledgehammer Games, a studio established in 2009. His involvement extended across various Sledgehammer-developed titles, collaborating with other studios like Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Raven Software on projects including the recent Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty: Warzone.
In a recent Twitter thread, Reisdorf detailed his career highlights. His early work on Modern Warfare 3 included memorable sequences like Soap's gurney scene in the "Blood Brothers" mission, a project he described as "fun and chaotic." He played a key role in shaping the "boots on the ground" era of Call of Duty, contributing to the gameplay mechanics of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, including boost jumps, dodging, and tactical reloads. He also designed unique weapons and multiplayer maps for the title. While he acknowledges some design choices, such as the "Pick 13" system, weren't without their challenges, his contributions were undeniably impactful.
Reisdorf's reflections also touched upon Call of Duty: WW2, highlighting the initial controversy surrounding the weapon class restrictions ("Divisions") and the subsequent positive changes made post-launch. His work on Call of Duty: Vanguard focused on creating engaging, traditional three-lane maps, prioritizing enjoyable gameplay over strict military realism.
His most recent contributions involved overseeing the multiplayer development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2023), including the creation of numerous live season modes such as Season 1's "Snowfight" and "Infectious Holiday." He spearheaded the development of over 20 modes throughout the game's post-launch support.
Reisdorf's departure marks the end of an era at Sledgehammer Games, but his influence on the Call of Duty franchise remains undeniable. His statement suggests he will continue his career in the gaming industry, and fans eagerly await his future projects.
