In a recent Twitter post, Vermeij disclosed that he initially found the train rides in Grand Theft Auto 3 to be "boring." He considered allowing players to skip directly to the next station, but this idea was unfeasible due to potential "streaming issues." Instead, Vermeij decided to enhance the train journey by making the camera switch between various viewpoints along the train tracks, adding an element of visual interest. This innovation caught the attention of a fellow developer who suggested applying a similar technique to cars. The result was the birth of the iconic cinematic camera angle, which the Rockstar team found "surprisingly entertaining."
Vermeij also noted that the cinematic camera angle remained unchanged in Grand Theft Auto Vice City, a game often hailed as one of the best in the series. However, it was later revamped by another Rockstar employee for Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. A dedicated fan even went to the effort of removing the cinematic camera angle from Grand Theft Auto 3 to demonstrate what the train journey might have looked like without Vermeij's creative intervention.
